Creative, Fun Projects to Keep Kids Engaged During the Cozy Week between Christmas and New Years!
These activities are great for beating the post-holiday lull, keeping little ones entertained, and creating memories they’ll cherish long after the holiday season is over!
Snowman S'mores
Supplies:
- Large Marshmallows
- Chocolate Chips
- Graham Crackers
- Pretzel Sticks (Arms)
- Candy Corn or Orange Candy Melts (Noses)
- Microwave oven and microwave-safe plate.
Make Your Marshmallow Snowman S’mores
1. To make the standing snowman, start with a full-size graham cracker. Cut two marshmallows in half. Place three halves on the graham cracker sticky-side down. Microwave until the marshmallows puff. (Watch very carefully. In our 1100-watt microwave, it took about 12-13 seconds.) Add broken pretzel sticks for arms. Chocolate chips make up the eyes and buttons, and I used a sliver of orange candy melt for the nose. Set aside to cool, if you can resist the gooey goodness:)
To make the snowman face, place remaining marshmallow half, cut side down on a graham cracker square. Microwave until the marshmallow puffs. I put these in slightly longer to get a nice round snowman face (maybe 14 seconds in our microwave). Add a piece of candy corn for the nose and a couple chocolate chips for the eyes.
Store in a single layer in a covered container. I’ve had success making them a day ahead if serving a crowd.
Enjoy those cold winter days eating s'mores, drinking hot chocolate, and making crafts with your little ones.

#DIY Galaxy sensory bin with household items
This is a really fun #DIY sensory bin for younger kids. My little one found it really relaxing as she found different objects within the bin. We made this bin very simple but you can add additional items to make it more fun and educational. Later, we added different planets and talked about them. You can make them out of foam or styrofoam.
Supplies:
1. Rice
2. Plastic or cardboard bin
3. Aluminum foil
4. Paper
5. Pasta strainer
6. Water
7. Spoon
8. Optional: Foam/styrofoam and paint.
Step 1:
I decided to use two different colors, purple and teal. This would work great adding a third color of pink or black as well. I had my kid help dye the rice and she really liked doing that. To start separate rice into bowls based on the number of colors you will use. You will want to have at least two cups of rice per bowl. You can adjust this number based on how large your bin is.
Step 2:
Put three to four drops of dye onto the dry rice. Begin to stir. The rice will look speckled but it should be evenly distributed. Pour three tablespoons of water and continue to stir until the rice is the desired color. Let this sit for 3-5 minutes. Repeat with each color.
After five minutes has elapsed, pour the rice into a pasta strainer (one color at a time) and rinse. Let the excess water drain. Pour into a dry bowl and let the rice dry. To speed up this process you can microwave the rice for one minute. Repeat for each color.
Step 3:
Take aluminum foil and roll it into a ball. This will be the moon rocks. Take the colored paper and cut it into different shapes. We chose the moon and stars. You can also make planets with the paper or you can use styrofoam/foam and paint them.
Step 4:
Pour the different colored rice side by side in the bin. If you added an additional color, you can swirl it on top. Add the cut-out paper items and the aluminum foil.
Step 5:
Explore outer space!
We hope you have fun making this sensory bin. Sometimes the most fun part is seeing how proud the kids are of their creations.

#DIY Bouncy Balls
#DIY Bouncy Balls are super easy to make and so much fun! To make these you will need the following ingredients.
1. 1/2 Cup of water
2. 1 Tbsp of Borax (can substitute for cornstarch, it will not bounce the same but it works)
3. Elmers Glue
Step 1.
Mix 1 Tbsp. of borax solution and warm water into a bowl. Stir the ingredients until the borax powder has completely dissolved.
Step 2:
Pour the Tbsp. of glue into the solution. Let it sit for at least one minute. The glue will begin to harden. Note: If you want to make a larger bouncy ball you can add more than a Tbsp.
Step 3:
Take the glue out of the bowl and put it into your hands to form a ball by moving them in a circular motion. Initially, it will feel slimy and then will begin to become more and more solid.
I hope your family had as much fun as ours creating these awesome bouncy balls!
