Making homemade sidewalk chalk is surprisingly simple—and fun! With just a few basic materials and a little patience, you’ll have your own set of colorful chalk sticks ready for outdoor art. All you need are some cardboard tubes, plaster, and your favorite paint colors. Be sure to plan ahead, as the chalk will need about 24 hours to fully dry.
What You’ll Need:
-
¾ cup powdered plaster
-
¼ cup water
-
One 4½-inch-long cardboard tube (like from a paper towel roll)
-
Waxed paper
-
Medium-size mixing bowl
-
Spoon
-
Liquid tempera paint (your choice of colors)
What to Do:
Step 1: Mix Your Chalk Base
In your mixing bowl, combine the powdered plaster with water. Stir until the mixture is about the consistency of toothpaste.
-
If it’s too runny, add 1 tablespoon of plaster at a time until thickened.
-
If it’s too thick, add a splash of water.
Step 2: Fill the Tube
Stand the cardboard tube upright on a piece of waxed paper. Spoon the mixture into the tube, tapping or pressing down gently to remove air bubbles.
Step 3: Let It Set
Let the filled tube rest upright for 3–4 hours until the chalk sets. Then carefully peel off the damp cardboard.
Step 4: Let It Dry
Place your chalk stick on a fresh piece of waxed paper and allow it to dry completely for 24 hours.
To Make Colored Chalk:
Want to add a pop of color? Simply mix liquid tempera paint into the plaster and water mixture (before filling the tube). Add enough paint to reach your desired shade, then follow the same steps as above.
Extend the Fun:
Once your chalk is dry, it’s time to hit the sidewalk! Use it on smooth driveways, patios, or sidewalks for hours of creative fun. For an indoor twist, pick up some chalkboard paint and transform a section of your wall into a reusable canvas. Kids can draw, doodle, and write messages all day long—without worrying about the mess.
