Fireworks in a Cup – A Dazzling Science Experiment for Kids! 🎆 - Little Dreamers Club

Bring some sparkle and science into your child’s day with this Fireworks in a Cup activity! 🌈✨

This fun and simple experiment uses kitchen ingredients to create colorful “fireworks” that burst and swirl in water — no flames, no noise, just pure wonder. It’s a magical way to explore how oil and water interact while making a little science look like art!

Perfect for celebrating holidays, adding sparkle to a rainy afternoon, or just sparking curiosity at home, this project is both educational and mesmerizing.

Ingredients (Per Cup):

  • 1 cup warm water (a clear glass works best)

  • 2–3 tbsp vegetable oil

  • 4–6 drops of food coloring (multiple colors)

  • Optional: clear drinking glass, small bowl, fork, or toothpick

Directions:

  1. Fill Your Fireworks Base:
Pour warm water into a clear glass until it’s about three-quarters full.

  2. Create the Color Layer:
In a separate small bowl, combine 2–3 tablespoons of oil with several drops of different food colors.
The drops will stay intact like tiny beads — gently mix with a fork or toothpick to slightly break them apart without fully blending.

  3. Let the Fireworks Begin!
Slowly pour the oil and food coloring mixture into the glass of warm water.
Watch in awe as the colorful droplets fall and explode into vibrant, swirling fireworks beneath the surface!

This easy experiment is a fantastic way to teach kids about density and solubility while keeping them entertained. They’ll love watching the “fireworks” dance and swirl — and you’ll love how simple and mess-free it is!

Try this project during your next family night or classroom science day for a truly magical moment of color and curiosity.
