There’s something about fall that makes spending a little extra time together in the kitchen feel especially cozy.
These Pumpkin Spice Rice Krispie Treats take a familiar childhood favorite and give it a simple autumn twist. They’re sweet, slightly spiced, easy for little helpers to make, and perfect for an after-school treat, family movie night, Thanksgiving gathering, or fall playdate.
Best of all, this is one of those recipes where kids can be involved in almost every step.
Why We Love This Fall Treat
Rice Krispie treats are already wonderfully simple, which makes them a great choice when you want an activity that feels special without turning into an all-day kitchen project.
Adding pumpkin spice makes them feel just right for the season.
They’re perfect for:
-
A cozy fall afternoon at home
-
Thanksgiving week
-
Classroom or family parties
-
After-school snacks
-
Fall movie nights
-
A simple kitchen activity with the kids
And because there’s no complicated decorating involved, children can enjoy the fun of making something without having to wait forever to eat it!
Pumpkin Spice Rice Krispie Treats
You’ll Need
-
6 cups crispy rice cereal
-
1 package mini marshmallows, about 10 ounces
-
3 tablespoons butter
-
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
-
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
-
Optional: orange, white, or fall-colored sprinkles
How to Make Them
1. Prepare your pan
Lightly grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper.
2. Melt the butter
With an adult handling the stove, melt the butter in a large saucepan over low heat.
3. Add the marshmallows
Add the marshmallows and stir until they are completely melted and smooth.
4. Add a little fall flavor
Stir in the pumpkin pie spice and vanilla.
The kitchen will start smelling a little more like fall already!
5. Add the cereal
Remove the pan from the heat and gently stir in the crispy rice cereal until everything is evenly coated.
6. Press into the pan
Transfer the mixture to your prepared baking dish.
Use a lightly buttered spatula, piece of parchment paper, or clean hands to gently press the mixture into an even layer.
Try not to press too firmly—a lighter touch helps keep the treats soft and chewy.
7. Add the finishing touches
If you’re using sprinkles, let the kids scatter them across the top while the treats are still slightly warm.
Allow the treats to cool before cutting them into squares.
How Kids Can Help
One of our favorite things about simple recipes is that cooking becomes another opportunity to create, play, and learn together.
Depending on their age, children can help:
-
Measure the cereal
-
Count spoonfuls
-
Sprinkle in the pumpkin spice
-
Pour ingredients into the bowl
-
Stir the cereal into the marshmallow mixture with supervision
-
Add sprinkles
-
Help press the mixture into the pan once it is cool enough
-
Decide how the finished treats should be cut or decorated
Younger children can practice pouring and counting, while older children can help measure ingredients and follow the recipe from beginning to end.
Turn Snack Time Into a Little Learning
Kitchen activities naturally bring in plenty of early learning without making the experience feel like a lesson.
Try asking questions such as:
How many cups of cereal do we need?
What happens to the marshmallows when they get warm?
Which ingredient smells the most like fall?
Should we cut our treats into squares, rectangles, or another shape?
You can also talk about textures—crunchy cereal, soft marshmallows, melted butter—and notice how the ingredients change as you work.
Simple conversations like these help children build vocabulary, observation skills, early math concepts, and confidence.
Make Them Extra Festive
Want to dress your treats up for a Thanksgiving table or fall gathering?
Try adding:
-
Fall-colored sprinkles
-
A drizzle of melted white chocolate
-
Candy eyes for silly little autumn monsters
-
A few mini chocolate chips
-
Small paper flags with each child’s name
You could even cut the treats into smaller rectangles and wrap them individually as a sweet little Thanksgiving favor.
Create a Cozy Fall Afternoon
The treats may only take a few minutes to make, but you can turn them into an entire afternoon of fall fun.
While they cool, pull out some craft supplies, read a favorite autumn story, take a short nature walk, or create something inspired by the colors of the season.
Sometimes the simplest activities become the ones children remember most.
At Little Dreamers Club, that’s exactly what we love about this time of year—finding easy ways for families to slow down, make something together, and enjoy a little everyday creativity.
Create. Play. Learn.
A Note for Grown-Ups
Adult supervision is required when using the stove and handling hot butter or melted marshmallows. Allow the mixture to cool to a safe temperature before little hands help press or shape the treats.
If serving these treats to children outside your immediate family, be sure to check for food allergies and dietary restrictions first.
Recipe Note: This fall variation was inspired by the classic Rice Krispies Treats™ recipe from WK Kellogg Co., with pumpkin pie spice and vanilla added for a cozy seasonal twist.
