🪼 What You’ll Need
-
Cupcake liner or coffee filters
-
Dot stickers or markers
-
Fuzzy sticks (chenille stem - pipe cleaners)
-
Tape or low-temp glue gun
-
LED tea light
-
Wired ribbon
-
Pencil
-
String or fishing line
🪼 How to Make a “Floating” Jellyfish
1️⃣ Create the Head
Turn a cupcake liner or nest a few coffee filters upside down to form the jellyfish head.
Decorate with dot stickers or draw on eyes, cheeks, and a mouth. You can even cut part of a sticker to create a smile!
2️⃣ Add the Hanger Loop
Cut a small piece of fuzzy stick and attach it to the bottom of the LED tea light using tape or glue. This will help secure your jellyfish inside its head.
3️⃣ Assemble the Glow
Poke a small hole in the top of the head. Slide the hanger loop through so the tea light is tucked underneath the liner or filters. We used a chenille stem.
Turn on the light — watch your jellyfish glow!
4️⃣ Make Curly Tentacles
Wrap wired ribbon or fuzzy sticks around a pencil to create curly tentacles.
Attach them around the tea light so they hang down beneath the head.
5️⃣ Make It “Float”
Tie string or fishing line to the top and hang your jellyfish from the ceiling.
Now it looks like it’s drifting through the ocean!
🌊 Extend the Fun
For Younger Kids (Ages 3–5)
Simplify by using half a paper plate for the head (curved side up).
Decorate the face with markers or stickers, then attach tentacles to the flat edge.
When finished, encourage storytelling:
-
Where does your jellyfish live?
-
Does it glow at night?
-
Who are its ocean friends?
Storytelling builds creativity, language skills, and confidence!
For Older Kids (6+)
Encourage embellishment:
-
Add glitter for sparkle
-
Thread beads onto tentacles
-
Use googly eyes
-
Layer multiple filters for texture
Then explore real jellyfish facts together:
Did you know?
-
Jellyfish have no brain, heart, bones, or eyes.
-
Some jellyfish produce their own light (bioluminescence)!
Now your craft becomes a science lesson too — the perfect mix of art and learning.
