Fall Leaf Cards: Turn a Nature Walk into a Thoughtful Craft

Fall crafts can begin before children ever sit down at the table.

Take a walk together and look for leaves in different colors, shapes, and sizes. Children can notice the changing trees, choose a few favorite leaves, and bring them home to turn into thoughtful handmade cards.

This simple project combines time outdoors, creative expression, and kindness. Once the cards are complete, children can send them to grandparents, teachers, friends, or anyone who could use a little fall cheer.

Supplies

• Collected fall leaves
• Blank note cards or folded card stock
• Envelopes
• Glue stick
• Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
• Optional stickers, ribbon, stamps, or paper shapes

A useful preparation step

Before gluing, place the leaves between sheets of paper and press them beneath a heavy book for a day or two. This helps flatten them and may make the finished cards easier to handle.

For a same-day activity, children can use freshly collected leaves, but flatter and drier leaves will usually attach more neatly.

Creative variations

Leaf animals

Turn a leaf into:

• An owl
• A fox
• A butterfly
• A fish
• A hedgehog
• A bird

Children can draw faces, legs, wings, or scenery around it.

Fall thank-you cards

Write a simple message inside:

• Thank you for helping me.
• I am thankful for you.
• You make me smile.
• Sending you a little fall happiness.

Leaf-shape observations

Before gluing, compare the leaves:

• Which is the largest?
• Which has the most points?
• Which colors do you see?
• Are the edges smooth or jagged?
• Which trees might they have come from?

Make matching envelopes

Decorate the envelopes with small leaf drawings, fingerprints, or fall-colored paper.
