Solar System Fun for Kids

Learning about space is even more exciting when kids can create, color, and build their own solar system. This hands-on craft helps children explore the planets while practicing creativity, fine motor skills, and early science vocabulary.

It is a fun screen-free activity for curious kids who love stars, planets, rockets, and outer space.

What You’ll Need

  • Solar system planet cutouts or printable planet templates
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Craft sticks
  • Glue dots, craft glue, or tape
  • A cardboard base, foam board, or wooden stand
  • Scissors
  • Optional: stickers, glitter glue, star cutouts, or labels

How to Make It

1. Color the Planets

Have your child color each planet using bright, creative colors. They can follow real planet colors or invent their own space-inspired designs.

2. Cut Out the Planets

Carefully cut out each planet. Younger children may need adult help with this step.

3. Attach Each Planet to a Craft Stick

Glue or tape one planet to the top of each craft stick. Let the glue dry before moving to the next step.

4. Create the Solar System Base

Use a cardboard strip, foam board, or wooden base to hold the planets upright. Children can decorate the base with stars, dots, or the words “Solar System.”

5. Arrange the Planets

Place the planets in order from the sun. This is a great time to introduce the planet names:

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

6. Play and Learn

Once the solar system is complete, invite your child to point to each planet, name the colors, count the planets, or talk about which one is their favorite.

Learning Ideas

Ask your child:

  • Which planet is closest to the sun?
  • Which planet has rings?
  • Which planet do we live on?
  • Which planet is the biggest?
  • What would your own pretend planet look like?

Parent Tip

You do not need the craft to be perfect. The goal is to let kids explore, ask questions, and enjoy learning through creative play.

Final Thought

Space activities are a wonderful way to spark curiosity and imagination. With a few simple supplies, kids can build their own solar system and discover that learning about space can feel just like play.

Create. Play. Learn.
