Craft a Kite That Sparkles Like Stained Glass! !

Looking for a beautiful, creative craft that looks just as good on a sunny window as it does flying in the air? This "Stained Glass" Kite is the perfect mix of art and imagination. Made with simple materials like tissue paper, construction paper, and yarn, it's easy for kids to make—and can actually fly with a little string!

Inspired by artist ProfessorThinkzles, this project brings colorful fun indoors or out and is great for sparking conversations about wind, light, color, and design.

✂️ Materials Needed:

  • Tissue paper (in a variety of colors)

  • Construction paper

  • Glue stick

  • Scissors

  • Yarn or string

🪁 Instructions:

1. Build the Frame
Cut out 3 long 1" strips of construction paper. Cut one in half and trim the others to form a diamond (kite) shape. Glue the edges to create your frame. Add two thin strips across the middle, one horizontal and one vertical.

2. Create the "Stained Glass" Effect
Cut small squares of tissue paper. Layer and glue them inside the kite frame so the colors overlap like stained glass. Make sure no gaps are left. Cover the edges with more construction paper strips for a clean finish.

3. Add the Tail
Cut about 12 inches of yarn. Glue it to the bottom of the kite. Then, cut out three tissue paper “bow ties” and tie them onto the yarn for a fun, fluttery tail.

4. Display or Fly It!
Tape your kite to a sunny window to let the colors shine—or reinforce the frame and add string to try it out as a real kite on a breezy day!

☀️ Why Kids Love It:

  • They get to mix colors like an artist

  • It brightens any space

  • They can personalize their kite’s shape, colors, and tail

  • It combines indoor crafting with outdoor play

Craft Time: 30–45 minutes
Best For Ages: 4+ (younger kids may need help with cutting)
Educational Boost: Teaches symmetry, color blending, and basic engineering!
