Some Halloween crafts are fun to make.
Some are fun to use.
This Cat Trick-or-Treat Basket is both.
With a simple basket, a few craft supplies, and a little creativity, kids can turn an ordinary treat basket into a friendly Halloween cat that is ready to hold candy, small surprises, or party favors. It’s a cute seasonal craft that also becomes part of the Halloween fun once trick-or-treating begins.
Whether your child is dressing up as a cat or simply loves Halloween animals, this project is a playful way to make the holiday feel even more special.
Why We Love This Craft
This project is especially fun because it:
-
Creates something kids can actually use
-
Feels festive without being too complicated
-
Works well as a parent-assisted craft
-
Can be personalized with different expressions and colors
-
Doubles as Halloween decor before trick-or-treat night
It’s a great choice for a family craft afternoon in October.

How to Make a Cat Trick-or-Treat Basket
Step 1: Start With Your Basket
Choose a black basket as the base for your cat.
Using a black basket keeps the project simple and avoids extra prep. If you already have a basket at home in another color, you could cover parts of it with black paper or fabric, but starting with black is easiest.
Step 2: Cut Out the Cat Features
From felt or card stock, cut out:
-
Two yellow cat eyes
-
Two narrow black pupils
-
One small white or light-colored nose
-
Two black ears
-
Optional white or pink inner-ear pieces
If you’d like a softer or sillier look, you can use googly eyes instead.
Step 3: Make the Face
Attach the eyes to the front of the basket.
Then glue the black pupils onto the yellow eye shapes.
Add the nose in the center, slightly below the eyes.
Already, the basket will start looking like a cat.
Step 4: Add the Whiskers
Cut black pipe cleaners into whisker lengths.
Attach three whiskers on each side of the nose.
Adults may want to help with this step so the whiskers stay secure and balanced.
Step 5: Add the Ears
Attach the cat ears to the inside or upper edge of the basket so they peek up from the top.
If you’re using inner-ear pieces, glue those on first before attaching the ears to the basket.
Step 6: Personalize Your Cat
Now it’s time to give your basket some personality.
Kids can decide if their cat looks:
-
Friendly
-
Silly
-
Sleepy
-
Curious
-
Spooky
-
Fancy
Optional add-ons:
-
A bow near one ear
-
A tiny tag with the cat’s name
-
A Halloween ribbon on the handle
-
Extra felt details
-
Stickers around the basket
Easy Adjustments by Age
Ages 3–5
For younger children:
-
Adults can pre-cut the eyes, ears, and nose
-
Children can help choose where the pieces go
-
Glue dots may be easier than liquid glue
-
Keep the design simple and focus on the fun of assembling the cat face
Ages 6–8
Older children can do more independently.
They may enjoy:
-
Cutting their own features
-
Choosing different cat expressions
-
Adding extra details
-
Naming the basket
-
Making one as a Halloween gift or party basket
Fill It With Halloween Fun
Once the basket is finished, it’s ready to use.
Kids can fill it with:
-
Wrapped candy
-
Small toys
-
Stickers
-
Glow sticks
-
Mini crayons
-
Temporary tattoos
-
Party favors
Before Halloween, it can also be used as a decoration or a little “boo basket” surprise for a sibling or friend.
Make It Part of Your Halloween Routine
This is the kind of craft that can become part of the excitement leading up to Halloween.
Kids can make the basket in advance, display it during October, and then carry it on Halloween night. That gives the project a little extra meaning because it becomes part of the celebration, not just a one-time activity.
It’s also a fun alternative to a store-bought treat bucket.
A Craft Kids Can Use and Enjoy
There’s something especially satisfying about making a craft and then using it in real life.
A few simple supplies can turn an ordinary basket into a friendly Halloween cat that children feel proud to carry from house to house.
So if your family is looking for an easy Halloween craft that is cute, useful, and fun to personalize, this Cat Trick-or-Treat Basket is a wonderful choice.
Create. Play. Learn.
