Camping with Young Kids: How to Actually Enjoy the Adventure - Little Dreamers Club

It's That Time of Year...

There’s something magical about the idea of camping with your kids.

You picture cozy campfires, gooey s’mores, giggles echoing through the trees, and a weekend unplugged from screens and stress. It feels like the kind of memory your kids will carry forever.

And then reality hits… 😅

Little legs get tired. Someone is hungry (again). Another one is bored. And suddenly, your dreamy outdoor adventure feels a little less relaxing.

But here’s the good news: camping with young kids can be fun—and even magical—with the right mindset and a little preparation.

Whether it’s your first trip or your fifth, these simple tips will help your family truly enjoy the experience.

1. Start Small (Really Small)

Before you head deep into the woods, try a “practice run.”

Set up a tent in your backyard or visit a campground close to home. This gives your kids a chance to experience sleeping outside—and gives you an easy exit if things don’t go as planned.

Think of it as your “training wheels” camping trip.

2. Gear - Don’t Overcomplicate

Camping gear can get expensive fast—but you don’t need everything right away.

Borrow what you can from friends or family before investing. Focus on the basics:

  • Tent
  • Sleeping bags or blankets
  • Flashlights
  • Simple cooking supplies

You’ll figure out what you actually need after your first trip.

3. Make Your Packing List Your Best Friend

Camping with kids = lots of stuff.

A checklist is your sanity saver. Include essentials like:

  • Extra clothes (especially socks!)
  • Bug spray
  • Sunscreen
  • Wet wipes & sanitizer
  • Snacks (lots of snacks)

Pro tip: Pack outfits in zip bags so mornings are easier.

4. Keep Food Easy (and Kid-Friendly)

Now is NOT the time for gourmet cooking.

Stick with simple, low-stress meals:

  • Hot dogs
  • Sandwiches
  • Foil packet meals
  • Easy breakfasts like eggs or muffins

And while s’mores are a classic, consider simplifying with:

  • Graham crackers + chocolate spread + mini marshmallows

Less mess, same fun.

5. Sleep = Everything

If no one sleeps, no one has fun. Period.

Bring:

  • Air mattresses or sleeping pads
  • Favorite blankets or stuffed animals
  • Layers for cooler nights

A well-rested family is a happy camping family.

6. Plan Activities Ahead (This Is a Game-Changer)

Kids don’t automatically “just play outside” for hours—especially at first.

Having a few simple activities ready makes a huge difference:

  • Nature scavenger hunts
  • Collecting rocks or leaves
  • Campfire stories or songs
  • “I Spy”
  • Bubbles or outdoor games

Bring a Creative Camping Activity 🎨

Outdoor crafts are perfect for downtime between adventures—and they keep little hands busy while sparking imagination.

Our Little Dreamers Club Camping Craft Box is designed for exactly this moment:

  • Easy, mess-friendly activities
  • Nature-inspired creativity
  • Engaging projects kids can do at the campsite or picnic table

It’s the perfect way to Create. Play. Learn.—even in the great outdoors.

7. Pack More Extras Than You Think You Need

When camping with kids, “extra” is essential.

Bring:

  • Extra socks (trust me on this one)
  • Extra clothes
  • Extra wipes
  • Extra snacks

And a few gallon-size bags—they’re surprisingly useful for everything from wet clothes to collected treasures.

8. Keep Expectations Low (and Joy High)

This might be the most important tip of all.

Things won’t go perfectly—and that’s okay.

Maybe your hike turns into five minutes of exploring rocks.
Maybe dinner is hot dogs two nights in a row.
Maybe the kids just want to splash in the water all day.

Let it happen.

The goal isn’t perfection—it’s connection.

The Real Magic of Camping with Kids 💛

Camping isn’t about doing everything “right.”

It’s about slowing down, laughing more, and experiencing something new together.

It’s about muddy shoes, sticky fingers, and bedtime stories under the stars.

And when you mix in a little creativity, a little play, and a lot of imagination—you create something even more meaningful.

Because the best family moments happen when kids can:

Create. Play. Learn.
