☄️ Make a Comet on a Stick - Little Dreamers Club

Bring space a little closer to home with this fun and simple Comet on a Stick activity!

A comet is a chunk of ice and rock flying through space. When it gets close to the sun, it heats up—and that’s when we can see its bright glow and long, streaming tails.

In this hands-on activity, your child will create their very own comet and send it flying around the room!

🧰 What You’ll Need

  • Chopsticks or a popsicle stick
  • Metallic ribbon (multiple colors if possible)
  • Scissors
  • Tin foil

🌈 Build a Real Comet

If you use different ribbon colors, you can model a comet just like scientists describe:

  • Tin foil → Nucleus (the solid center)
  • Short ribbon → Coma (the glowing cloud around it)
  • Long ribbons → Dust tail & gas tail

Try using:

  • Red for the coma
  • Silver for the dust tail
  • Gold for the gas tail

🚀 What to Do

  1. Cut five pieces of ribbon:
    • 2 long
    • 2 medium
    • 1 short
(Tip: Make long pieces up to 3 feet for extra dramatic tails!)
  2. Tie the ribbons to the end of your stick
(Tie close to the edge to keep them long and flowy)
  3. Cut three square pieces of tin foil
  4. Hold ribbons to one side and wrap foil around the top of the stick
  5. Shape the foil into a ball while keeping ribbons free
  6. Repeat with more foil to make your comet bigger
  7. Now it’s time to play—fly your comet around the room!

🌌 Learning Moment

As kids build and play, they’re learning:

  • What comets are made of
  • How the sun creates their glowing tails
  • Basic space science concepts through hands-on play
