Rainbow Walking Water Science Experiment for Kids May 4, 2025 - Little Dreamers Club

Looking for a simple, magical science activity that will totally WOW your kids? This Rainbow Walking Water Experiment is one of our all-time favorites!

It’s colorful, hands-on, and incredibly easy to set up—plus, kids get to watch water “walk” right before their eyes. It’s the perfect mix of science + creativity, making it ideal for preschoolers and elementary-aged kids.

At Little Dreamers Club, we love activities that help kids create, play, and learn—and this one checks every box.

This activity is inspired by a classic walking water experiment loved by educators and families.

✨ Why Kids Love This Experiment

This activity is pure magic from a child’s perspective:

  • 🌈 Bright, beautiful rainbow colors
  • 👀 Fast, visible results
  • 🧪 Real science in action
  • 🎨 Fun color mixing discovery

Honestly, even adults get mesmerized watching the water travel and colors blend!

🧰 Supplies You’ll Need

You likely already have everything at home:

  • Clear plastic cups or glasses (7 total)
  • Paper towels (absorbent works best)
  • Water
  • Food coloring (red, yellow, blue)
  • Printable recording sheet (optional)

💡 Tip: Use “pick-a-size” paper towels or cut full sheets in half for best results.

🧪 How to Set Up the Walking Water Experiment

  1. Line up 7 cups in a row.
  2. Fill the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th cups about ¾ full with water.
  3. Add food coloring:
    • Red → Cups 1 & 7
    • Yellow → Cup 3
    • Blue → Cup 5
  4. Fold paper towels lengthwise twice to create strips.
  5. Place one end of a paper towel into one cup and the other end into the next cup, connecting all cups.

Now… watch the magic begin!

👀 What Happens Next?

Within minutes, you’ll see the colored water start to climb up the paper towel.

Soon, it “walks” down into the empty cups—and that’s when the real fun begins:

  • Red + Yellow → Orange
  • Yellow + Blue → Green
  • Blue + Red → Purple

Over time, the cups begin forming a beautiful rainbow!

💬 Questions to Ask Your Kids

Turn this into a full learning experience by asking:

  • What do you think will happen next?
  • Why are the colors changing?
  • How is the water moving upward?
  • What new colors do you see forming?

This encourages critical thinking and observation skills.

🔬 The Science Behind It (Kid-Friendly!)

This experiment demonstrates something called capillary action.

That’s a big word for a simple idea:

👉 Water can travel through tiny spaces—even against gravity!

The paper towel is made of small fibers with tiny gaps. Water moves through those gaps, pulling itself upward and across into the next cup.

This is the same way plants move water from their roots up to their leaves!

🎨 Extend the Fun

Want to take it further?

  • Create a color wheel by removing one cup
  • Let kids predict new color combinations
  • Use it as part of a rainbow or spring theme unit
  • Pair it with one of your Little Dreamers Club craft boxes

🌟 Why This Activity Is a Must-Try

This experiment is:

✔ Easy to set up
✔ Budget-friendly
✔ Educational
✔ Visually exciting
✔ Perfect for ages 3–8

If you’re looking for a screen-free activity that blends science and creativity, this is it.

💡 Final Thoughts

This simple experiment turns everyday materials into a hands-on science adventure your kids won’t forget.

It’s the kind of activity that sparks curiosity, encourages creativity, and makes learning feel like play—exactly what we love at Little Dreamers Club.

Create. Play. Learn. 🌈
